Appendix 1 - Usages of Pneuma

When considering the usages of pneuma (spirit) and hagion (holy) in the new testament, we need to consider a few things. First of all, according to the majority of the Greek texts and the Aramaic Peshitta text, eleven scriptures with the word pneuma in them should have it deleted, and three scriptures should have it added.

We must also consider the article the. In English, the article the affects the sense of a sentence. In the Aramaic language - which most scholars believe was the original language of the written bible while Greek was a translation from it - there is no article the. As there is such a huge difference between holy spirit and the Holy Spirit, we must carefully check the context to determine whether or not the article the should or should not be included.

Uses of pneuma can generally be categorised, and for this work I will categorise them thus:

Usage 1 - God, who is Holy Spirit.

Usage 2 - the gift of holy spirit or the gift of holy spirit in manifestation.

Usage 3 - old testament spirit.

Usage 4 - devil spirits.

Usage 5 - angels.

Usage 6 - used figuratively, such as for the soul of man.

Usage 7 - Christ in his resurrected body or a reference to the one we receive at the return.

Matthew 1:18 usage 1
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of [ek - by, out from] the Holy Ghost [pneuma].

Matthew 1:20 usage 1
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost [pneuma].

Matthew 3:11 usage 2
I [John the Baptist] indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [pneuma], and with fire:

This baptism with pneuma hagion and fire is a prophecy referring to the new birth and the receiving of the gift of holy spirit.

Matthew 3:16 usage 3
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit [pneuma] of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

The pneuma of God is the spirit from God. Some Greek texts omit the article the before pneuma. This isn't referring to the gift of holy spirit which came on the day of Pentecost as that wasn't yet available so this is referring to old testament spirit.

Matthew 4:1 usage 3
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit [pneuma] into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Matthew 5:3 usage 6
Blessed are
the poor in spirit [pneuma]: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This is a figure of speech referring to people within themselves, within their own minds.

Matthew 8:16 usage 4
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits [pneumata] with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Matthew 10:1 usage 4
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits [pneumata], to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Matthew 10:20 usage 3

Matthew 12:18 usage 3

Matthew 12:28 usage 3

Matthew 12:31 usage 1

Ghost [pneuma] shall not be forgiven unto men.

Mathew 12:32 usage 1
And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost [pneuma], it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world
to come.

Matthew 12:43 usage 4
When the unclean spirit [pneuma] is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

Matthew 12:45 usage 4
Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits [pneumata] more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last
state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Matthew 14:26 deleted
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit [phantasma]; and they cried out for fear.

Spirit is to be deleted here as the Aramaic uses phantasma. Pneuma should therefore be replaced with phantasma, an apparition or phantom.

Matthew 22:43 usage 3
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit [pneuma] call him Lord, saying,

Matthew 26:41 usage 6
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit [pneuma] indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak.

Matthew 27:50 usage 6
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost [pneuma].

Pneuma is used figuratively to mean he died.

Matthew 28:19 deleted
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in my name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

If Jesus Christ had issued this command to his disciples just prior to his ascension, why didn't his disciples ever carry it out? Not once anywhere in the book of Acts did his disciples ever baptise anyone in the name of the father, son and holy ghost. Rather, they exclusively baptised in the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 8:16
(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Acts 10:48
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Acts 19:5
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Further, Eusebius, who died in 340 AD, quoted Matthew 29:19 eighteen times from manuscripts in existence at the time and he never once used these words, he always quoted Matthew 28:19 as 'baptising them in my name'. Pneuma must be deleted as all the evidence points to a vatican forgery sometime after the Council of Nicaea.

Mark 1:8 usage 2
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [pneuma].

Mark 8:12 usage 3
And he sighed deeply in his spirit [pneuma], and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

Jesus Christ could not have stated that no sign would be given to that generation unless he had received that information by revelation from God. So this is old testament spirit in operation.

Mark 9:17 usage 4
And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit [pneuma];

Mark 9:20 usage 4
And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit [pneuma] tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

Mark 9:25 usage 4, usage 4

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost [pneuma], and prophesied, saying,

Luke 1:80 usage 6
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit [pneuma], and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

John was born with old testament spirit, which was tailor made and custom built for the job for which it was intended, so this is figurative. See Luke 2:40.

Luke 2:40 usage 6
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit [pneuma], filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Most Greek texts omit spirit, but the Aramaic includes it. As Jesus Christ did not receive old testament spirit until he was 30 years old, if left in then this must be a figurative reference similar to Luke 1:80.

Luke 3:16 usage 2
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [pneuma] and with fire:

According to the majority of Greek texts, verses 55 and 56 should be deleted as indicated.

Some Greek texts add hagion and the preposition by. The Aramaic reads by holy spirit.

Luke 11:13 usage 3
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit [pneuma] to them that ask him?

If this were prophetically referring to the coming gift of holy spirit, it would be usage 2, but it appears Jesus Christ was telling these people this spirit he referred to was already available.

Acts 18:5 deleted
And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

The Aramaic and all the Greek texts except Stephens omit pneuma, and read Paul was engrossed in the word. The Darby bible translates the verse thus:

Acts 18:5
And when both Silas and Timotheus came down from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in respect of the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

Acts 18:25 usage 6
This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit [pneuma], he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

... being fervent spiritually...

Acts 19:21 usage 6
After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit [pneuma], when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

Aramaic uses reyana for mind and not rucha for spirit. If pneuma is left, it must be regarded as figurative usage for his mind because God certainly did not want Paul going to Jerusalem.

Acts 20:22 usage 2
And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit [pneuma] unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

Acts20:23 usage 2

Acts 20:28 usage 2
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost [pneuma] hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

The pronoun he in which he hath purchased can be tracked back through the verse to be associated with the holy spirit. As this holy spirit purchased the church of God with his own blood, it must refer to Christ. The holy spirit is Christ in us. As Christ is head over all things to the church, selecting overseers would be his responsibility. This must be referring to the Christ in us.

Acts 23:8 usage 2 and 3
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit [pneuma]: but the Pharisees confess both.

This can't be referring to angles because angels are already listed, so it must be referring to both old testament and grace administration holy spirit.

Acts 23:9 usage 2, 3 or 5
And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit [pneuma] or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

The Pharisees didn't understand spiritual matters, so this is a general reference to any spirit available to man, but they certainly wouldn't have inferred a devil spirit.

Acts 28:25 usage 1
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost [pneuma] by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

Christ wasn't around in Isaiah's time, he wasn't head over all things to the church then, and there was no gift of holy spirit, so this must be referring to God.

The balance of the verse from Christ Jesus is omitted. Spirit is also omitted in the Aramaic.

Romans 8:13 usage 2
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit [pneuma] do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

How you mortify the deeds of the body is by walking by the spirit, not by renewing your mind. Without using it to walk by the spirit, renewing the mind is just a work of the flesh, a five senses ability, and there is nothing spiritual about it.

Romans 8:14 usage 2
For as many as are led by the Spirit [pneuma] of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 usage 8, usage 2

Romans 8:26 usage 2, usage 2
Likewise the Spirit [pneuma] also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit [pneuma] itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 usage 2
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit [pneuma], because he [it] maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

He that searches the hearts is God, and God knows the mind of our spirit which makes intercession for us, as stated in verse 26, therefore, it must be the same usage as verse 26.

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost [pneuma],

1 Corinthians 2:14 usage 2
